House Of The Future

The philosopher Gaston Bachelard says: "Sometimes the house of the future is better built, lighter ... than all the houses of the past, so that the image of the dream house is opposed to that of the childhood home. Late in life, with indomitable courage, we continue to say that we are going to do what we have not yet done: we are going to build a house. This dream house may be merely … the embodiment of everything that is considered convenient, comfortable, healthy, sound, desirable, by other people. It must therefore satisfy both pride and reason, two irreconcilable terms.” He also said that this house may be so far in the future that it may never manifest, but that it could pull you along with its allure. I spend a lot of time dreaming about that house.

With the images on this page I am working towards that “house of the future”. These images are a collection of ideas that have come out of the sketch books that I have filled for the last 40 or so years. The workflow which culminates in these photorealistic images starts when I find an idea from a sketch book, build that idea into an image in CAD, and finally render it with a render engine. The rendering engine is a tool, not a partner, I am not using it to create the design.

My hope is that, in sharing these images, clients can see more of my personal work, which might pique some interest in making one of these ideas a reality. There are a few images in this portfolio that have already begun their journey towards the real.
